It is not yet known whether immunosuppressive therapy is more effective than supportive care in treating myelodysplastic syndrome. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of antithymocyte globulin with that of supportive care in treating patients who have myelodysplastic syndrome.
